What is Pleurisy?

Your lungs could be quite sensitive as even though they are not directly exposed to the atmosphere they are indirectly connected with all the atmospheric pollution and other hazards. The functionality of the lungs is also very important as they get oxygen from the atmosphere and enrich your blood with them. The blood that is enriched with Oxygen is transported to various parts of your body that gives energy. Nature had understood the importance of the lungs and provided with a layer of protection to it called pleura. The pleura are almost like a lining over the lungs that separates it from the heart and other parts in that region. Inflammation to that protective layer could be uncomfortable and such inflammation is called Pleurisy.

Types of Pleurisy

There are two types of Pleurisies. One is dry Pleurisy which is accompanied by dry coughs. This could be a result of some infection or excessive smoking. The other type is wet Pleurisy. This is accompanied by coughs that produce sputum that is yellowish or reddish.

Causes of Pleurisy

  • Inflamed Outer Parietal Pleura Inflamed Visceral Pleura Pleural Effusion
  • Lung infections, like tuberculosis and pneumonia.
  • Injuries to the chest.
  • Other medical conditions, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, pulmonary embolism, and liver diseases.
  • Reactions to certain medicines.
  • Pleurisy commonly occurs due to some other underlying medical condition, which should be treated first. A person can have pleural effusion even without pleurisy.
  • Medical conditions, such as heart failure, kidney disease, and liver disease can also cause pleural effusion without the additional pain and inflammation of pleurisy.
  • Arteries carry blood in and out of the lungs and clotting of blood in the arteries
  • Excessive smoking and addiction to alcohol.
  • Having pneumonia also could induce pleurisy.
  • Pleurisy could be caused as an aftermath of heart surgeries.
  • Rib Fractures could also be a cause of Pleurisy.
  • Lung cancer could also be a cause.

Symptoms of Pleurisy

The most common symptom of pleurisy is chest pain. The pain could be sharp and intolerable and it might even start as a small aching in that region. An abnormal change in your breathing patterns like it becoming slow, or fast, or shallow could also be a symptom. Take a deep breath and see if it inflicts some pain in the chest region and if the pain is felt then that could be a symptom of Pleurisy. Continuous dry coughs and coughs producing yellow-colored sputum or even blood in the worst conditions could be a symptom that has to be taken care of.

Diagnosis for Pleurisy

If any of the symptoms as explained earlier are experienced then it better to consult a doctor immediately and undergo certain tests. The first test that is suggested is having an X-ray test on your chest region. The results would show if there are any abnormalities in the lungs and heart. CT scan and Ultrasound might also be suggested by a Doctor that will show whether the patient

has any signs of having any tumor and infectious diseases like pneumonia. A blood test will also have to be conducted. If there is a doubt of cancer then the doctor might also suggest a biopsy. Blockage in the arteries also has to be detected as they are one of the main causes of Pleurisy. MRI or magnetic resonance imaging will have to be conducted to find out if there are any blockages in the arteries.

Treatment for Pleurisy

Treatment for Pleurisy is normally directed towards the main cause that has caused it. But the real challenge would be to reduce the pain that it creates. Even for this, the approach would be cause-oriented. If the inflammation is caused by some bacterial infection then painkillers could be taken to reduce the discomfort created by the pain. If the inflammation is caused by viral infections then pain reducers like NSAIDS or in some cases Doctor might suggest corticosteroids that would reduce the intensity of the pain. If it is a wet Pleurisy with the secretion of fluids then a manual removal of the fluids might be suggested by the doctor. Thoracentesis is a procedure that removes those unwanted fluids from the lungs and the chest region. If the problem had been there for a quite long time the sudden removal of the fluids might create a void in that region which would lead to uncontrollable pains. In such a case, strong pain medication is suggested to ease the pain.

  1. It’s pretty interesting that the mainstream media has changed the way it looks at this recently don’t you think? What once seemed like a never discussed issue has become more prevalent. Overall though I’m looking for a change.
